A trip worth making once: how to choose

Bucket lists describe the taste of whoever wrote them, not yours.

The problem with lists

They sort by fame. But fame predicts crowding, not the value of an experience — and often the reverse: a very famous place is one where you are sold access to an image you already know.

A trip is memorable because it moved you, not because it was on a list.

Three more useful questions

What can I bear?

Heat, altitude, crowds, uncertainty, discomfort, no shared language. An exceptional trip under conditions your body refuses is not exceptional.

What do I want to bring back?

Light, silence, a skill, an encounter, physical tiredness. These answers guide far better than a destination.

What have I never done?

What marks people is almost never a place but a first time: sleeping outdoors, understanding no language around you, walking for days without a vehicle, staying three weeks in one village.

Season matters more than place. The same location in and out of season are two different trips — often to the point where one is worth the journey and the other is not.

Duration

Under ten days, a distant trip is mostly transport and adjustment. If you have only a week, a nearby but genuinely inhabited place will beat a distant one crossed at speed.

our piece on slow travel compares forms of stay by what each person needs in order to recover.

Discover what resonates within you

RÉSONANCE asks you nothing. You walk through a chamber, and the way you inhabit it composes your profile — then your universe of presences.
