Slow travel: choosing a stay that actually rests you

People rarely come back tired from a slow journey. They often come back exhausted from a full one.

Slow travel is not about distance or budget. It is about density: fewer places, more time in each, and transitions long enough for the body to follow.

Why holidays exhaust people

Three causes recur, and none concerns the destination.

Four forms of stay, and who they suit

The silent retreat

Abbeys, meditation centres and secular houses offer them. Silence is a frame, not a performance. They suit people short on solitude — and are gruelling for people short on connection.

One practical point rarely mentioned: the first three days are the hardest. Mental agitation rises, boredom appears, and many people seriously consider leaving. This is why a retreat shorter than five days rarely delivers what is expected of it.

Travelling with friends

Success rests on one thing: agreeing in advance, without guilt, on stretches where each person does what they want alone. Groups that separate for half a day every other day hold together far better than those that stay together throughout.

The organised tour

It removes decision load, which is a real advantage — particularly for a first trip after a difficult event, or for older travellers. The price is an imposed pace. Always ask how many nights per stop: three changes everything.

The restorative stay

Little programme, one place, nature within walking distance. The safest form for someone arriving depleted.

Travelling in November has an advantage summer does not: empty places, low prices. The drawback is light. At northern latitudes the useful day runs about seven hours. If you are going in order to rest, go south or go high — light matters more than temperature.

Choose by need, not by destination

The useful questions are not about the place: can I bear the noise of a group? do I recover alone or in company? does an empty schedule unsettle me or restore me? do I need horizon or envelopment?

These are exactly the dimensions RÉSONANCE records — need for withdrawal, need for horizon, tolerance for noise, need for structure, pull toward nature — without asking, by observing how you cross a chamber.

Discover what resonates within you

RÉSONANCE asks you nothing. You walk through a chamber, and the way you inhabit it composes your profile — then your universe of presences.
