What it says
The lotus speaks of purity passing through without being marked. It is among the oldest and most widespread symbols: central to Buddhism and Hinduism, present in ancient Egypt, and the national flower of India and Vietnam.
The reading is always the same: rooted in mud, crossing murky water, opening immaculate at the surface. Rising does not deny the origin — it passes through it.
Lotus and water lily
Not the same plants, and the confusion is constant. The lotus holds leaves and flowers above the water on upright stems; the leaf is round and unbroken. The water lily floats on the surface, and its leaf has a characteristic notch.
The lotus effect
The lotus leaf is covered in waxy micro-structures that prevent water from adhering: a drop beads and rolls, carrying dust with it. The surface cleans itself.
Described scientifically in the 1970s, this property has produced a whole family of industrial coatings — façade paints, water-repellent textiles, self-cleaning glass. The symbol was right before the measurement.
Lotus seeds retain exceptional viability. Seeds dated to more than a thousand years old have germinated in the laboratory.
In perfumery
Lotus notes are reconstructions: aquatic, green, slightly powdery. The real flower smells faintly, and not of what is attributed to it.
