Handmade objects: recognising what will last

A handmade object is not recognised by its perfection. It is recognised by its deviations.

The word artisanal is unprotected for most products. An object can be industrially moulded, machine-sanded and hand-finished for thirty seconds, and still be sold as handmade. Here is what settles it.

The marks of the hand

Materials and what they become

What distinguishes a noble material is not cost but ageing. Vegetable-tanned leather darkens and softens; chrome-tanned leather cracks. Unlacquered brass develops a patina; lacquered brass flakes. Solid wood is repairable; veneer is replaceable. Linen softens with every wash; blends pill.

The right question in front of an object is not "is it beautiful?" but "what will it look like in ten years?". Noble materials answer that question well; that is their most useful definition.

Price alone proves nothing. Many industrial objects are sold at artisan prices, with a workshop story and photographs of hands. The story has become a sales argument; the marks of the hand have not.

The questions to ask

A serious workshop answers plainly: who made this piece, where, in how long? Where does the raw material come from? How many pieces a year? Do you repair your objects? Evasion on any one of these tells you more than any label.

In France the useful labels are Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, awarded by the state and verifiable, and Maître d'art, a rare individual distinction. Self-declared mentions on a shop page are worth nothing.

Choosing an object that suits you

The harder part remains: a well-made object is not therefore yours. Relationships to material vary — some need surfaces that hold traces, others tolerate only the smooth and the clean.

the catalogue gathers houses chosen for the quality of their work. The profile composed by RÉSONANCE — including relationship to touch, to light and to abundance — then determines which are shown to you.

Discover what resonates within you

RÉSONANCE asks you nothing. You walk through a chamber, and the way you inhabit it composes your profile — then your universe of presences.
