What it says
The cyclamen speaks of lasting sincerity and an attachment that does not display itself. Its petals are swept back as if pushed by wind, while the flower itself hangs toward the ground: it turns its back on the viewer.
It flowers out of season — autumn to early spring depending on species — when almost nothing else does. That is constancy against the calendar.
A remarkable mechanism
After flowering, the stalk coils on itself like a spring and carries the seed capsule down to soil level, often under the leaves. The plant buries its own offspring rather than dispersing it.
This behaviour, which almost nobody notices, explains why wild cyclamen form dense, slow colonies instead of spreading far.
What kills it indoors
Heat, and watering from above. Cyclamen is a Mediterranean woodland plant: it wants cool — fifteen degrees is plenty — bright light without direct sun, and water given in the saucer, never onto the tuber.
A cyclamen collapsing in an overheated room is not thirsty. It is too warm. More water finishes it.
The tuber is toxic to humans and pets. Flowers and leaves much less so, but the whole plant should be kept away from cats and small children.
